Welcome to My Blog!
You can check my blog for updates in the classroom, reminders, and pictures!

Important Dates and Reminders:
  • Ask your child about his/her penpal! We are writing to a 1st/2nd grade classroom of students from Glenview. We will get to meet our penpals via Skype at the end of May!
Please click on the link to learn more about typing this year for our 2nd graders!

Ask your child about:

  • The Zones of Regulation! Students are using these zones to articulate their feelings. This poster is helpful for students.

Mystery Reader
*Please email me if you are interested in being a Mystery Reader! The best day/time is on Fridays at 11:00. If that does not work for you, we can work something out!

What we are learning about in the classroom:
Literacy:
Reading: We have been reading several texts about pioneers. This connected very well to our last two texts about Johnny Appleseed as those books also focused on settlers moving west. We read one text called Pioneers to the West which was nonfiction and we just finished reading Going West and this was a historical fiction text. Students really enjoyed learning so much about the pioneers and the struggle they faced on their journeys west.

Daily 5: We have been working on our different Dailies! Students have been working on read to self, read to someone, listening to reading, work on writing, and word work. Students have been enjoying the different sorts to practice their word sorts.

Writing: We have connected our Pioneer texts to our writing. Students wrote one narrative about a family traveling west. These were so fun to read! They just finished writing a narrative about an adventure. This narrative could be realistic or imaginary. These narratives are preparing them for the narratives that they will be writing independently within the next few days! I am so proud of their hard work! They have been adding so many details, especially through the use of "Show don't Tell!"

Words Their WayWords Their Way has been going very well. Students will bring home their sort after it has been taught and reviewed in class. These sorts can be kept at home. We will be giving frequent check-ins to ensure that students are retaining these word patterns. There will not be weekly homework because they are practicing at school. Students are encouraged to continue practicing these sorts at home. These links will help you with sorts:

Math: Unit 6 was a huge success! As you hopefully noticed on their post tests, students did a great job with geometry! Unit 7 focuses mostly on measurement (meters) and money word problems!

If you click the link below, you will find many ideas and games that can easily be played at home.

Social Studies: In Social Studies we are currently working on reading and understanding maps. This connects nicely with our Science unit as well!

Science: Ask your child about the treasure hunt that they went on in order to practice creating and reading maps! It was a blast!
